Sana Sesimbra Hotel****

Great value hotel on the beach in the charming resort of Sesimbra, close to Lisbon.

The Sana Sesimbra Hotel enjoys a great position in Sesimbra, a traditional Portuguese seaside resort close to Lisbon, famous for its freshly caught and cooked fish and shellfish, washed down with a local wine or a Superbock beer!

This modern, stylish hotel sits right on the beach overlooking the sea. It has good sized, well furnished rooms and bathrooms and it’s well worth upgrading to a seaview room to enjoy the evening sunsets.

The hotel has a rooftop bar and balcony, from where there are great views, as well as a rooftop swimming pool, which converts to an indoor pool in the winter.

The bars and restaurants of Sesimbra are a short stroll away where you will probably find more locals than foreign tourists as this is very much a Portuguese resort.

There are five excellent golf courses closeby, including the spectacular Troia course and the more traditional and beautifully maintained Quinta da Peru – the local members course.

Golf Do Estoril has hosted the Portuguese Open on several occasions and is one of Portugal’s best regarded courses. With wonderful views out towards the Atlantic, this masterpiece of a golf course was designed by Mackenzie Ross, who made good use of the surrounding pine trees and eucalyptuses through which the course is set. Although a relatively short golf course, it demands great accuracy with its uneven terrain and tight fairways and is a joy to play for golfers of all standards.

Riba Golf I&II

Opened in 2004, Riba Golfe I&II are set within cork oak trees and undulating countryside with their clever design making full use of the contours of the site, providing some spectacular holes across valleys and lakes. Riba I is characterised by narrow fairways so accuracy is the key whereas Riba II is more open, but has a variety of obstacles including pot bunkers, streams and ponds to keep you thinking.

Quinta do Peru

Enjoyed by low and high handicappers alike, Quinta do Peru is set within delightful countryside with the Arrabida mountains in the background. The course proves extremely popular, because of not only its excellent playing condition and greens, but also for the variety of holes on offer. It’s Par 3s in particular stand out, 2 being around 200 metres from the back tees and water comes into play on 6 of the holes. A relatively easy walking course, Quinta do Peru is well worth a visit.

Aroeira I&II

Thought by many to be the Wentworth of Lisbon, Aroeira I opened in 1973, and provides a real challenge to golfers of all abilities with its narrow fairways lined by pine forests and with several lakes defending its greens. Aroeira II opened in April 2000, and is characterised by its 5 lakes coming into play throughout this golf course. Both courses have been regularly used for European Tour events over the years.
