Costa de la Luz, Spain

Islantilla Golf Resort ****

The Islantilla Beach & Golf Resort re-opened in March 2020 after a complete renovation of the hotel and has been rebranded the Double Tree by Hilton Islantilla Beach & Golf Resort. If you like the idea of staying in a good quality hotel, with a 27 hole golf course right on your doorstep, the Islantilla Golf Resort is the place for you.

This modern, well-equipped four-star hotel is located right in the middle of Islantilla Golf Course, and yet still only 800m from the resort’s magnificent beach. The hotel’s wonderful location on the Costa de la Luz, Spain, means that you still have plenty of time after your golf to spend the rest of your day relaxing by the pool or down at the beach at Islantilla, which is a 15-20 minute stroll away.

The hotel also has its own Beach Club on Islantilla beach where you can relax at their swimming pool, terrace, bar and restaurant. A free service by a mini-train from the hotel and back, is available for guests (in high season only).

There is a small shopping centre nearby where you can also find some bars and restaurants, and the hotel itself has its own ’English’ pub, which is a great spot to enjoy an après-golf drink or two in the evening and discuss the highs and lows of the day!

The beautiful city of Seville is only 90 km away, and the area is steeped in Columbus history, being his final resting point before setting sail for America.

A 27 hole course which offers the opportunity of playing 3 different 18 hole combinations. Opened in 1992, Islantilla has a lush parkland layout, and lies close enough to the sea to offer fine views over the Atlantic Ocean. Each of the 9 hole combinations offers a different challenge, Holes 1 to 9 are hilly with a few blind shots; Holes 10 to 18 are undulating with hanging lies to be expected; Holes 19 to 27 are long but not overly difficult. An interesting and challenging course which offers something for everybody.

El Rompido North

El Rompido North course opened in June 2006 and has quickly earned a fine reputation as one of the finest courses in Andalucia. Whilst it is still based around the Marismas (marshlands) the course is both longer and wider than its sister, the South course. The greens have settled well and seem to become trickier the further into your round you get, being well guarded with bunkers. It is a fairly flat course and worth walking to enjoy some great views across the Marismas towards the sea.

El Rompido South

El Rompido South is situated within the protected natural marsh area of Las Marismas (marshlands) del Rompido and has wonderful views over the Atlantic Ocean. The front nine holes are relatively open allowing you to ease into the course with a fair degree of risk taking, whereas the back nine is fairly short but tight and if you cannot keep your ball straight it will end up in the Marismas. This attractive course is easily walkable and offers an enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels.

Bellavista is Spain’s oldest golf club, being formed in 1916 by the British workers who had come across to Spain to work in the Rio Tinto mines. Its parkland layout provides a good challenge for all levels of golfers, with narrow fairways, numerous doglegs and many opportunities to go out-of-bounds. It has a number of lengthy Par 4s and 5s where it is an achievement in itself just to reach their beautifully maintained greens in regulation. Worth a visit to see one of Spain’s traditional members courses, more similar in style to what we have in the UK.

La Monacilla

A wonderful new addition to the golf courses in Costa de la Luz, La Monacilla is a relatively flat, easy to walk course which has been carved out of a local pine forest. Designed by Jose Maria Olazabel, the course lies in a tranquil, picturesque setting and is characterised by large greens, wide fairways and 2 spectacular lakes around the 2nd and 7th holes. The course has quickly earned an excellent reputation, and is a must play for any visitors to the area.
